Servant Evangelism
Servant Evangelism
‘The goodness of God leads people to repentance’ (‘Romans 2:4). ‘Love never fails, (1 Cor. 13:8). The world is in desperate need of love. Not just any love, but the kind of love God has for them. People have been abused, abandoned and deeply wounded by the love of the world. God is giving us a great open door to touch our hurting world with His unconditional love. This is a big part of what New Testament evangelism is all about. Jesus was the evangelist of all evangelist, and he showed compassion to everyone he encountered.
One of the forms of evangelism we teach and train churches to do is called, ‘servant evangelism’. This is where we go out and perform some kind of act of kindness to show them the love of Jesus in a very practical way. Sometimes we go to the parks and give away free bottles of water. Many times they ask why we are doing this. We say, ‘this is just a simple and practical way to show you the love of Jesus’. Then we ask them if there is something they would like to see God do in their life. Then we stop right there and pray for them. We have seen grown men break down and cry because of the love they felt.
It is amazing how easy this kind of evangelism is. It is all about being nice and loving people. Every Christian should be doing this anyway. The churches we have trained in servant evangelism have been ignited with a fresh love for people. This is a sure way to see a church come alive in reaching its community.
